Lee Ranaldo - Between The Times & The Tides
Matador | March 2012
7.7
Lee Ranaldo is infinitely cooler than you. Even before he was slinging ax in Sonic Youth, he was challenging the norms in Glenn Branca’s legendary New York guitar orchestra. Now, the 56 year-old veteran releases his ninth solo record and first for Matador. The material consists along expected lines of torche-wielding rock n roll with domineering undertones not too distant from standard Sonic Youth tropes. The record taunts a who’s who of modern experimental rock with appearances and collaborations with Nels Cline, Jim O’Rourke, Steve Shelley, and Alan Licht and hones that druggy tenseness that have become synonymous with his previous output and projects. Ironically, the best tracks on Between The Times & The Tides like “Shouts” see Ranaldo relatively laid-back and carefree evoking R.E.M. reflective aspects. Never fear, there are still plenty of noise-rock twitches to put you on edge, but this clomped with Thurston Moore’s 2011 record Demolished Thoughts and Sonic Youth’s 2009 record The Eternal proves that even while the collective tone of the musicians gets lighter and freer, the quality has yet to falter.
